Is black mold removal DIY or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a big patch of black mold hidden behind it, probably from a slow AC leak we never noticed. I know I need to get this sorted for their health, but I have no idea what it costs to get professionals in to test and remove it properly. Is this a job I can handle myself with cleaners from the supermarket, or is it worth the expense to hire a company?

Given the hidden nature of the growth and your children's persistent symptoms, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment and remediation. The black substance behind your sofa is a significant indicator of a moisture issue, common in Deira apartments due to high humidity and year-round AC use causing condensation leaks.

While small, surface-level mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be addressed with careful DIY methods, a large patch hidden behind furniture is not a candidate for supermarket cleaners. The mold has likely penetrated the porous wall material itself, and improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, potentially worsening your children's respiratory irritation. The primary goal is not just to wipe away the visible growth but to identify and fix the moisture source—likely that AC leak—to prevent immediate regrowth.

For a case like this, professional remediation is strongly advised. Reputable companies in the UAE follow standards that include containment of the affected area, use of HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, and safe removal of contaminated materials. Crucially, they will diagnose and help rectify the root moisture problem. The cost for professional services is an investment in resolving the issue completely and verifying the environment is safe through post-remediation testing, which is particularly valuable given the health symptoms present. Start by requesting an inspection and a scope of work from a certified provider.
