Can we remove mold ourselves or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa has felt really damp since the last round of humidity, and I’ve started noticing some black speckles in the corner of the ceiling near the AC vent. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach ourselves this weekend, but I’m worried it might be inside the walls or the AC unit itself. Is this something we can safely handle on our own, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold inspector?

It depends on the extent and source. For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) caused by temporary condensation, a DIY approach can be effective. However, your description of dampness and its location near the AC vent suggests a more systemic issue common in Dubai villas.

The high humidity here means that visible mold is often just the tip of the iceberg. The moisture source could be a leaking AC condensate drain line inside the wall, poor insulation causing thermal bridging and condensation, or a breach in the building envelope. Bleach only removes surface discoloration; it doesn't address the root moisture problem or kill the mold's hyphae roots penetrating porous materials like drywall or concrete.

Scrubbing it yourself can aerosolize spores, potentially spreading the contamination into the AC system and throughout the room. For any recurring mold, suspected hidden growth, or if anyone in the household has allergies or respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is strongly advised. An inspector will use moisture meters and borescopes to check inside walls and the AC unit itself, identifying the exact moisture source that must be fixed first. They can also take air or tape-lift samples for lab analysis to identify the species, which informs the proper remediation protocol. Without stopping the moisture at its source, the mold will simply return.
