Safe DIY removal of black mold in bathroom without chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted patches of black mold in the corner of our master bathroom shower. We’re in a villa in Mirdif, and it’s been so humid since the weather changed a few weeks ago. What’s the safest way to get rid of it myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

Black mold in bathrooms is extremely common here due to our high humidity and condensation from hot showers. For a small patch (under one square foot), DIY removal is often possible without harsh chemicals.

Start by mixing a solution of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle (undiluted vinegar works best). Spray it generously on the moldy area and let it sit for at least an hour to penetrate and kill the spores. Then, scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush. For more stubborn mold, baking soda made into a paste with water is an effective, non-toxic abrasive. Always wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning to avoid inhaling or touching spores.

The key is to address the moisture source. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and keep the bathroom door open to improve air circulation. Wipe down wet walls and shower doors with a squeegee after use. In Dubai's climate, this is essential to prevent rapid regrowth.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, it may indicate a deeper issue within the wall or ceiling. This is when a professional inspection is advised to assess the extent and identify hidden moisture problems, as persistent mold can be an irritant, especially for children with coughs.
