Is black mold in bathroom urgent for kids' health?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bathroom for the last couple of months. It's behind the toilet, near the floor, and seems to be spreading up the wall. With this humidity, I'm worried it's getting worse quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, and should I be keeping the kids out of the bathroom entirely?

Yes, it is urgent to address black mold in a bathroom when children are experiencing respiratory symptoms. The persistent humidity in Dubai creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive, especially in bathrooms where condensation from showers and poor ventilation provides constant moisture. This type of environment can cause even a small patch to spread rapidly, as you've observed.

For children, exposure to mold spores can irritate the respiratory system, leading to or exacerbating coughing, wheezing, and nasal congestion. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stichbotrys chartarum, many common species can cause these allergic reactions. The risk is higher in enclosed, frequently used spaces like a bathroom where spore concentration becomes elevated.

You should restrict your children's access to that bathroom until the mold is properly remediated. The process of cleaning can aerosolize spores, making the air quality worse temporarily. For a recurring issue that is spreading on drywall, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. DIY cleaning with bleach often only removes the surface discoloration, leaving the root colony intact within the porous wall material. Professionals use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during removal.

The long-term solution involves fixing the moisture source—often inadequate ventilation. Ensure your bathroom's exhaust fan is functioning correctly and run it for at least 30 minutes after showers. Wiping down wet surfaces and using a dehumidifier can also help manage humidity levels between professional cleanings.
