How to remove and prevent musty closet mold for good?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots forming in the corners of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. The musty smell is really strong when we open the doors, and it's starting to get on our clothes. I run the AC constantly, so I'm surprised this is happening. What's the best way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots are likely mold growth fueled by Dubai's high humidity, and the musty smell confirms active colonization. Your constantly running AC is part of the issue—if the unit is oversized or set too cold, it cools the air quickly without running long enough to remove sufficient moisture, creating the damp conditions mold needs in enclosed spaces.
For cleaning, first address the source. Move all affected clothing to be professionally dry-cleaned or laundered in hot water. To remove the mold from surfaces, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes surface color and does not kill the roots embedded in porous materials like drywall. Scrub the affected corners thoroughly. Allow the area to dry completely using a fan, but only after the mold is removed to avoid spreading spores. Preventing its return requires controlling humidity. That interior wall might be a cold surface where moisture condenses. Use a hygrometer to check the closet's humidity level; it should be consistently below 60%. Leave the closet doors open periodically to allow air circulation from the AC. Consider using a renewable desiccant like silica gel inside the closet to absorb excess moisture. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and its drain line is clear to ensure it's effectively dehumidifying your home. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, has caused visible damage to the wall, or returns quickly after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended. They can identify the exact species and moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution, especially since some species common in the region can be more persistent. |
