How to clean bathroom mold and report to management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been really humid lately and I think the bathroom’s exhaust fan isn’t strong enough. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be reporting this to my building management?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is extremely common due to the high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. For a small patch where the wall meets the ceiling, you can clean it yourself safely.
First, ensure the area is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Spray the area thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Vinegar is effective against most common household molds and is less harsh than bleach, which often only removes the surface color. After scrubbing, wipe the area dry and use a fan or dehumidifier to keep it completely dry for 24 hours. The underlying cause is almost always excess moisture. Your weak exhaust fan is a key contributor. Run it during and for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wipe down wet walls and the ceiling corner with a squeegee to remove standing water. For a more lasting solution, consider a small portable dehumidifier run periodically. You should report this to your building management in Marina. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, landlords are responsible for maintaining the property's structural integrity and essential ventilation systems. A persistent mold issue, especially one linked to a potentially underpowered exhaust fan, is a valid maintenance request. Frame it as a ventilation and moisture control issue. If the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning or covers an area larger than a square meter, a professional inspection is recommended to rule out a hidden leak within the ceiling or walls, which is a common issue in older buildings. |
