Dealing with black mold in Dubai bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with all the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. I'm worried it's spreading but don't know if it's something I can just clean with bleach myself or if I need to call a professional company to handle it.
What's the best way to deal with mold in a Dubai bedroom, and at what point should I definitely call for help?

Black mold in a bedroom closet is a common issue in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation that forms on cooler walls, especially when AC vents are nearby. The first step is to identify and stop the moisture source; it's often a small, unnoticed leak from an AC condensation drain line or pipe in the wall, or simply persistent humidity from lack of airflow behind stored items.
For a small patch (under one square foot) that you've just discovered, you can clean it yourself. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed future mold growth while only bleaching the colour. Instead, use a dedicated mold-cleaning solution, white vinegar, or a diluted detergent. Scrub the area thoroughly, allow it to dry completely, and ensure excellent ventilation to prevent it from returning. Dispose of any porous, moldy materials like cardboard boxes. You should definitely call for a professional inspection and remediation if the patch is large (over one square meter), if it returns quickly after cleaning, if you discover significant hidden growth behind baseboards or drywall, or if household members experience persistent respiratory issues, headaches, or fatigue. Professionals use containment, HEPA filtration, and antimicrobial treatments to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of the home during removal. In cases of suspected toxic black mold (Stachybotrys) or for legal documentation, a lab test from a company with its own microbiology lab is necessary to identify the species and confirm the environment is safe post-remediation. |
