Black mold in shower: DIY fix or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Village Circle apartment for 2 years and just noticed these black spots creeping out from behind the silicone sealant around our shower. It's been super humid lately and the smell is really musty, especially when the AC isn't running. What's the best way to tackle this myself, or should I just call my building's maintenance immediately?

Black mold in bathroom silicone is common in Dubai's high humidity, especially when condensation forms between AC cycles. For a small area (under one square foot), you can attempt a DIY fix. First, completely remove the old silicone sealant and any visible mold. Use a mold-killing cleaner specifically designed for bathrooms; avoid bleach as it only surface-cleans and doesn't kill the roots. Let the area dry thoroughly for at least 24 hours with a fan or dehumidifier running. Then, apply a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant to prevent regrowth.

However, if the mold has spread behind tiles or into the grout lines, or if there's a persistent musty smell even after cleaning, the issue is likely deeper. In apartments, this often indicates a leak from adjacent units or within the wall cavity itself. For cases beyond surface-level, contacting your building's maintenance is the correct step. They are responsible for investigating and repairing leaks in the building's structure. A professional inspection can determine if the moisture source is internal condensation or an external leak, which is critical for a permanent solution.
