How urgently should I remove black mold for coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but it's spread along the base of the wall where it meets the floor. Given how humid it's been lately, how urgently do I need to get this professionally removed?

Black mold behind a wardrobe with coughing children is a situation that warrants immediate professional assessment. The combination of visible growth and respiratory symptoms means you should act within days, not weeks.

The high humidity we've been experiencing creates ideal conditions for mold, especially in cooler, stagnant areas like behind furniture. This growth is likely due to condensation from your AC unit or a minor, hidden water leak. The constant AC use in Dubai, while necessary, can create significant condensation if drainage lines are compromised or insulation is poor.

For children, any mold exposure can irritate airways and exacerbate coughing. A professional inspection is crucial here because simply wiping it away is not enough. The inspector will use a moisture meter to find the water source—which could be inside the wall—and assess the extent of the spread you can't see. Proper remediation involves fixing that moisture issue first, then containing and removing the contaminated materials safely to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home during cleaning.

Given the symptoms, I would recommend a company that can provide both inspection and remediation, with the ability to conduct pre- and post-remediation air quality testing to verify the environment is safe for your family. This documented proof is what separates a proper job from a superficial clean.
