Can we remove closet mold ourselves or need a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the master bedroom closet, probably from a slow leak in the en-suite bathroom. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for months, and I'm starting to worry it's connected. Is this something we can handle ourselves with bleach from Ace Hardware, or do we absolutely need to call in a professional mold remediation company, and what kind of cost are we looking at for a small area like this?

The black mold in your closet is likely connected to your husband's symptoms, as consistent exposure to mold spores commonly causes nasal congestion and headaches, especially overnight. Given Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use, hidden moisture from that en-suite leak can create an ideal environment for mold growth behind walls.

For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can attempt DIY removal if the underlying leak is fully repaired. Use a microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water, not bleach. Bleach fumes are hazardous in enclosed spaces and only removes surface discoloration, not the mold's root structure. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during cleaning.

However, professional assessment is strongly recommended. The patch you see is often just the tip of the iceberg; the moisture likely spread into the wall cavity. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and borescopes to check for hidden growth. Without addressing that, the mold will return. Remediation cost varies significantly by the extent of the hidden damage, but for a contained area like a closet, it is typically a more limited project. The key expense is the proper drying and sanitizing of the structure, not just surface cleaning.
