Is this mold and who to inspect safely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past few weeks, and I just found what looks like black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We're in an older building in Bur Dubai, and the AC unit in that room has been leaking a little. Could this be mold, and who do I call for a proper inspection that's trustworthy with kids in the house?

Based on your description, it is highly likely to be mold. The combination of an older building in Bur Dubai, a leaking AC unit (a constant moisture source), and the appearance of black spots is a classic scenario. The persistent coughing in your children is a significant indicator, as mold exposure commonly causes respiratory irritation, especially in kids.

In Dubai's climate, AC units are a primary breeding ground for mold due to the constant condensation and high humidity. A leaking unit creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow, often spreading to adjacent walls and hidden spaces like behind furniture. You should immediately stop using that AC unit to prevent further spore dispersal.

For a situation involving children's health and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Do not attempt to disturb or clean it yourself, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. You need a provider that uses a calibrated moisture meter to find the full extent of the water damage and takes air and surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is critical for understanding the health risk and planning the correct remediation. Look for a company that is certified and can provide a detailed report with lab results, not just a visual assessment. This documented evidence is what separates a legitimate inspection from a simple look-see.
