Could this mold be making my family sick in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I’ve been getting terrible headaches. I finally pulled out the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind it, probably from a slow leak I never noticed. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for years and just found this. Could this mold be the reason we’re all feeling so sick, and what’s the best way to get it properly cleaned here in Dubai?

Yes, the mold you found could very well be causing your family's persistent coughs and headaches. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation behind furniture create ideal conditions for mold growth, especially from an undetected leak. The continuous exposure to mold spores in your home's air is a common trigger for respiratory irritation, allergic reactions, and sinus pressure that manifests as headaches.
For a patch you describe as "huge," professional remediation is strongly advised. The initial step is a professional inspection to identify the moisture source—this is critical, as simply cleaning the visible mold is ineffective if the leak isn't fixed. In villas, common sources include leaking AC drain lines, pipe condensation, or seepage from external walls. Proper remediation involves more than wiping it down. The area must be contained to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home during cleaning. Specialized antimicrobial agents are used to treat the wall, and any severely affected porous materials like drywall or insulation may need to be removed and replaced. Air scrubbers are also employed to clean the air during and after the process. After remediation, consider environmental testing to verify the spore count in your indoor air has returned to a normal baseline. This provides peace of mind that the issue is fully resolved. For health concerns, consulting a physician is always recommended, as they can confirm if symptoms are consistent with mold exposure. |
