Black mold in damp bedroom closet: clean or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoe boxes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside and the area feels slightly damp. With the humidity lately, I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the best way to safely clean this myself, or should I call my building management in Dubai immediately?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall, especially with a damp feel, points to a moisture issue that needs immediate attention. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned interior and the hot exterior wall, or a small leak.
For a patch smaller than a square foot, you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted soap solution. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and dispose of all cleaning materials. However, this only addresses the symptom, not the moisture source. Given the location on an exterior wall and the dampness, the root cause is likely structural. You should notify your building management immediately. Dubai Law No. 26 of 2007 and the Dubai Strud Property Law hold the Owners' Association responsible for maintaining common property, which includes the building's external walls and structure. They are obligated to investigate and rectify the source of the moisture intrusion to prevent recurrence. While cleaning the visible growth is a temporary measure, a professional inspection is recommended to assess if the mold has spread inside the wall cavity. Persistent dampness behind drywall can lead to widespread colonization unseen. A proper assessment with moisture meters and, if necessary, air or surface sampling, can determine the full scope before remediation begins. |
