Could my kids' cough be from black mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I'm starting to panic. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Khalifa City villa and found a huge patch of black mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit drips. It's been so humid lately that the walls never seem to fully dry out. Could this mold be the reason for their constant cold-like symptoms and should I get them tested for anything specific?

Yes, the black mold behind your sofa is very likely contributing to your children's persistent cough and cold-like symptoms. In Dubai's high humidity, AC condensation creates constant dampness, and the resulting mold releases spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) that are known respiratory irritants.

The constant cough is a classic response to these irritants, especially in children whose airways are more sensitive. While most residential mold isn't highly toxic, prolonged exposure can significantly worsen allergies and asthma. You should first consult a pediatrician, describing the mold exposure. They can assess for allergy-related issues; specific mold allergy testing might be recommended, but treating the environment is the primary step.

For the mold itself, a professional inspection is strongly advised in this case due to the hidden location and size you describe. They can assess the extent of growth inside the wall cavity and identify the species, as some types like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") require more careful remediation. In the UAE, remediation companies should follow DM guidelines and provide before-and-after testing to verify the spore count has returned to safe, outdoor levels. Immediately improve ventilation in that room and use a dehumidifier to help walls dry. Do not attempt to clean large patches yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores.
