Mold behind wardrobe: handyman or specialist needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom. It’s in our villa in Jumeirah Park, and it’s definitely gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. Is this a job for a regular handyman, or do I need to call a specialist for a proper mold inspection?

That black spot pattern spreading behind your wardrobe is a classic sign of a moisture issue, and in Dubai's current humidity, it absolutely warrants a specialist's inspection, not a handyman. The handyman's approach of simply wiping and painting over the mould will fail because it doesn't address the root cause—the hidden moisture source. The mould will return, often worse than before.

The location behind a large piece of furniture is a major red flag. Wardrobes are often placed against exterior walls, which are prime areas for condensation in our climate due to the extreme temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid outside air. This creates a hidden, poorly ventilated pocket where mould thrives unseen until it becomes extensive. The recent spike in humidity has likely accelerated this process.

A proper mould inspection for this scenario involves more than a visual check. A specialist will use a moisture meter to quantify the water content within that wall and a thermal imaging camera to identify any hidden cold spots or leaks that could be causing condensation. Crucially, they should perform air and surface sampling to be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab. This identifies the species present—some are merely irritants while others can be more problematic—and provides the evidence needed to plan an effective remediation, not just a cover-up.

For a villa in Jumeirah Park with a recurring issue, the investment in a diagnostic inspection is essential. It will pinpoint whether you're dealing with a simple case of condensation or something more significant like a minor plumbing leak or compromised insulation. Without this diagnosis, any fix is just a temporary solution.
