Black mold behind wardrobe: call management or hire pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been really humid lately and I’m worried it’s mold. What’s the best way to get rid of it properly, and should I be calling our building management first or just hiring a professional myself?

Black spots spreading behind a wardrobe in JVC during humid weather are almost certainly mold, a common issue here due to the condensation that forms on cold walls behind furniture. The first step is to move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation and assess the full extent.

You should notify your building management immediately. Under Dubai regulations, they are typically responsible for the building's structure, including the external walls and any leaks that might be causing this moisture intrusion. They may send their own maintenance team to investigate and address the source of the water, which is the most critical part of a permanent fix.

For the mold itself, a small patch (under one square meter) can sometimes be cleaned with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but proper removal is key to prevent spores from spreading. Given it's behind furniture and spreading, a professional inspection is wise to identify the species and ensure it's handled safely. They use containment and HEPA filtration to clean without contaminating your bedroom.

In many cases, the best approach is a combination: building management fixes the leak or insulation issue, and a mold remediation professional handles the safe removal and verification that the space is clean. For a confirmed assessment, a lab test can identify the type of mold, which guides the remediation approach.
