Black mold in closet: DIY fix or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been so humid lately that I'm worried it's spreading behind the shelves. What's the best way to handle this myself, or should I call my building's maintenance immediately?

Given Dubai's high humidity, this is a common issue, especially on exterior walls where condensation can form. Your first step is to assess the extent. If the patch is smaller than a square foot and confined to the surface, a DIY approach may be sufficient.

For a small patch, mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted bleach solution (wear gloves and ensure good ventilation). Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. However, this only addresses visible growth. The critical step is identifying and controlling the moisture source. In your case, it's likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall.

Before calling building maintenance, check your lease agreement. It often specifies who is responsible for internal wall repairs versus structural issues. Maintenance should be called immediately if you suspect a leak from plumbing or the exterior, or if the drywall feels soft or damp, indicating moisture within the wall cavity. For persistent humidity issues, using a standalone dehumidifier in the room or moisture-absorbing products in the closet can help.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or you or family members experience respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is advised. They can use moisture meters to find hidden dampness and air sampling to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the remediation is complete. In many villas and older buildings, this is a recurring issue that requires a long-term moisture control strategy, not just a one-time clean.
