Can we treat black mold ourselves or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Jumeirah villa, probably from the AC condensation. My husband has been having terrible sinus headaches for the last month and I'm worried it's connected. Is this something we can treat ourselves with bleach from ACE, or do we absolutely need to call a professional mold remediation company? And if so, what's a realistic cost in Dubai for a single room?

The black mould behind your wardrobe is almost certainly from AC condensation, a very common issue in Dubai's humid climate where AC units run year-round. Given the size of the patch and your husband's sinus symptoms, a DIY bleach clean is not recommended. Bleach only removes surface discolouration on porous materials like drywall; it doesn't kill the mould roots or address the hidden moisture source.

For a large patch, professional remediation is strongly advised. The process involves containment to prevent spores from spreading, specialised antimicrobial treatment to address the root system, and fixing the underlying condensation issue. The cost for a single room remediation in Dubai varies significantly based on the extent of the damage behind the wall and the required containment measures. You can expect a reputable company to provide a detailed assessment and quote after an on-site inspection.

Given the health symptoms, consider a professional inspection that includes air quality testing. This can identify the mould species and spore count, which is valuable information, especially if symptoms persist after cleaning. For any visible mould over one square meter, or when health issues are present, Dubai Municipality guidelines recommend engaging licensed professionals to ensure it's handled safely and effectively.
