Best long-term solution for mold in Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on my leather bags and shoes. It’s been getting worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. I’m worried about my clothes getting ruined and what this might be doing to the air we breathe.
What’s the most effective long-term solution to prevent mold in closets here, like a specific dehumidifier or moisture absorber you’ve had success with?

That damp smell on leather is a classic sign of high humidity and likely mold growth. The root cause is Dubai's high ambient humidity, which gets trapped in enclosed spaces like closets, especially if it's on an exterior wall or near a bathroom.
The most effective long-term solution is controlling the relative humidity inside the closet to below 60%. For a small enclosed space, a compact, electric dehumidifier is far more effective than disposable moisture absorbers. Look for a mini or desktop model with a Peltier (thermoelectric) module, as they are silent and efficient for areas under 15m². Place it inside the closet and empty its reservoir regularly. Silica gel desiccant packs can help inside individual shoe boxes or handbags, but they won't solve the room-wide issue. Address the source: Ensure your AC is running consistently, even when you're out, to dehumidify the entire apartment. Check that the closet isn't crammed full; air needs to circulate. Leave a small gap between the wall and your clothing rack. If the smell persists after reducing humidity, you likely have active mold growth that needs to be addressed. The leather may need professional cleaning and the closet interior may require remediation. For a persistent, strong odor, a professional inspection can identify the species and extent of the problem, which is crucial for an effective long-term solution. |
