How to remove black mold from shower ceiling corner?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower wall meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. It’s been really humid lately and I think the ventilation isn't great. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call my building management first?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is common due to the high humidity and condensation from air conditioning. For a small patch (under one square foot) you've just noticed, a DIY approach is often effective.
Start by mixing a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is effective against most common household molds. Spray the area thoroughly, letting it soak for at least an hour. Then scrub with a stiff-bristled brush. For persistent stains, a paste of baking soda and water can be used as an abrasive scrub. Never mix vinegar with bleach, as it creates toxic gas. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. Improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and leave the bathroom door open to allow moisture to escape. Given the location is a ceiling corner, check for a potential leak from the apartment above. The building management should be notified if the mold returns quickly or if the drywall feels soft or damp, as this indicates a hidden moisture issue within the building envelope that they are responsible for addressing. If the area is large, has a musty odor, or you experience unexplained allergy symptoms, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling can identify the mold species and the full extent of the problem. |
