DIY mold fix or pro needed for Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of the master bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the ensuite bathroom. The AC is always running, but the room still feels damp. I'm worried about my family's health and the cost. Is this a DIY fix with bleach or do I absolutely need to hire a professional mold remediation company here in Dubai, and what kind of cost am I looking at for a small area like this?

The damp feeling despite AC running is classic for Dubai's climate, where high outdoor humidity condenses on cooler interior surfaces. That closet corner is likely a cold spot, creating the perfect damp environment for mold.

Bleach is not recommended. It only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture problem or the mold's structure beneath the surface. For a small, visible patch, a thorough DIY approach can be effective if the moisture source is fixed. Scrub the area with a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of white vinegar and baking soda. Dry it completely, then improve ventilation to that corner; this may require running a dehumidifier or directing airflow from the AC into the space.

However, given the location shares a wall with a bathroom, the mold could be more extensive inside the wall cavity if there is a hidden plumbing leak or persistent condensation. A professional inspection is strongly advised to rule this out. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess what you cannot see. Remediation cost for a truly small area is typically modest, but it is entirely dependent on the extent of the hidden problem. Always request a detailed assessment and quote that includes the cause, the scope of work, and verification that the area is dry and clean after completion.
