Is black mold in my Dubai shower urgent?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. It’s small now, but with the constant humidity here, I'm worried it will spread quickly behind the tiles. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from ACE?

Yes, it's urgent to address now while it's still small. Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold to spread quickly behind tiles and into drywall, where it becomes much harder to eradicate.

For a small, visible patch (under one square foot), you can attempt treatment yourself. Use a dedicated mold cleaner from a hardware store—not bleach, as it only surface-bleaches and doesn't kill the roots. Scrub thoroughly, dry the area completely, and improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower.

However, its location where the shower meets the ceiling is a high-risk area. This often indicates persistent condensation or a potential leak from the unit above, allowing moisture into the ceiling void. If the mold returns within a few weeks despite cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if you notice a musty smell, this strongly suggests hidden growth. In these cases, a professional inspection with a moisture meter is critical to assess the extent behind the tiles and in the ceiling. They can identify if the issue is surface condensation or a more serious leak that needs repair first.
