Can I clean mold in AC vent myself with bleach?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and I just spotted a patch of black, fuzzy stuff inside the vent when I changed the filter. It’s been getting worse over the last month with the humidity. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional company to handle it?

Cleaning visible mold in your AC vent with bleach is not recommended and can be ineffective or even hazardous. Bleach does not prevent mold from returning, and its fumes can be circulated by the AC system, irritating your respiratory system. More critically, the patch you see is likely just the fruiting body; the actual fungal network (mycelium) could be deep within the ductwork or on the cooling coils, which you cannot access or properly treat yourself.

Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this creates a perfect environment for mold growth inside the units and ducts. A surface wipe only addresses a fraction of the problem. For a musty odor and visible growth, a professional assessment is advised. They use specialized equipment like borescopes to inspect deep inside ducts and HEPA vacuants for proper containment. Remediation involves antimicrobial coatings designed for HVAC systems to help prevent regrowth.

The most critical step is identifying the moisture source—often condensation from a clogged drain line or insufficient insulation—and correcting it. Without this, the mold will return. A company with its own microbiology lab can provide a culture to confirm the species, which is important for assessing risk, especially if household members have allergies or respiratory conditions.
