How to permanently stop black mold in humid Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold that keeps coming back in the corners of our master bedroom. We’re in a Jumeirah villa and it’s worst on the wall facing the sea, especially since the humidity really kicked in a few weeks ago. I scrub it away with bleach every month but it just returns. What’s the permanent solution to stop this mold from growing back?

Black mold recurrence after bleaching points to a deeper moisture issue that the surface cleaning isn't addressing. In a Jumeirah villa with sea-facing walls, the high ambient humidity is likely condensing on cooler internal wall surfaces, creating the constant dampness mold needs to live.

Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and paint; it only removes the surface discoloration, not the root structure. The permanent solution requires a three-step approach: moisture control, physical removal, and surface treatment.

First, identify and stop the moisture source. For condensation on exterior walls, this often means improving insulation or increasing air circulation. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and consider using a standalone dehumidifier in that room, especially during humid months. Check for any hidden leaks from the roof or plumbing in that wall cavity.

Second, the moldy drywall or plaster is likely compromised. Scrubbing spreads spores. Professional remediation involves physically removing and replacing the affected porous materials to eliminate the colony entirely.

Finally, after the source is fixed and contaminated materials are removed, apply an EPA-approved antimicrobial coating to the cleaned wall studs and new drywall to prevent regrowth. This is a specialized process.

Given the health symptoms and persistent return, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the exact condensation points and hidden dampness you can't see. Reputable firms will provide before-and-after lab testing to verify the space is safe.
