Child-safe way to remove black mold from bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our master bathroom. It’s been extra humid lately, and I’m worried the spores are affecting their health. What’s the most effective and child-safe way to get rid of this for good?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate is very common due to the high humidity and condensation from hot showers meeting cool AC-chilled surfaces. For a small patch where the shower meets the ceiling, you can handle this safely yourself.
First, ensure the area is well-ventilated. Wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid inhaling or touching spores. For a child-safe cleaning solution, use undiluted white vinegar in a spray bottle. Soak the mold patch thoroughly, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Do not mix vinegar with bleach or other chemicals. Baking soda paste is another safe, abrasive option. After cleaning, run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least an hour and keep the door open to dry the area completely. The key to preventing its return is controlling moisture. Wipe down wet walls after every shower. Check that your exhaust fan is powerful enough; it should be able to hold a piece of toilet paper against the grille when on. Consider a small deshumidifier for the room if humidity persists. If the mold covers more than one square meter, is in the ceiling cavity, or returns quickly after thorough cleaning, the issue may be deeper, like a hidden leak or insufficient insulation. In these cases, or if the cough persists, a professional inspection is wise to identify the moisture source and assess the spore levels in the air, which a certified lab test can quantify. |
