Is my AC mold making me sick and who to call?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been blowing out a weird damp smell for the past month, and now I keep waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I just pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in black and greenish fuzzy spots. I'm worried this is why my allergies have been so bad lately. Is this dangerous mold and who should I call to get it properly cleaned?

The black and green fuzzy growth on your AC filter is very likely mold, and it is almost certainly the cause of your stuffy nose, sore throat, and worsened allergies. The damp smell confirms active microbial growth inside the unit. In Dubai's high humidity, AC systems are a prime location for mold because condensation constantly provides moisture.
For a situation with visible growth and physical symptoms, a standard cleaning is not sufficient. You need a professional mold inspection. The inspector should use a borescope to examine the dark, damp interior of your AC unit and ductwork for hidden growth. They must also identify and rectify the moisture source, which is often a clogged condensate drain pan or line—a very common issue here. Do not call a general AC cleaning service. You require a specialist in mold remediation. A reputable company will not just spray and wipe; they will provide before-and-after documentation, such as surface or air sample lab results, to verify the unit's environment has been measurably improved. In Dubai, ensure any provider follows DHA (Dubai Health Authority) guidelines for indoor environmental quality. Until the inspection, keep the AC unit turned off to prevent it from blowing spores throughout your apartment. Replace the filter with a new one as a temporary measure, but understand this only addresses a symptom, not the root cause inside the unit itself. |
