How to remove black mold and who to call in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels slightly damp. I'm really worried about our health and the smell. What's the best way to get rid of it for good and who should I call in Dubai to check if there's a bigger problem with the building?

That damp patch behind your clothes is a classic sign of a condensation or moisture issue, very common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant AC use creating temperature differentials on walls.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of water and detergent. Avoid bleach; it only removes the colour and doesn't kill the mould roots. Dry the area thoroughly with a fan immediately after cleaning. However, because the wall feels damp and it's on an exterior wall, this is likely a recurring issue. The moisture is probably coming from inside the wall, meaning the cleaning will only be temporary.

The priority is to find and fix the source of the moisture. In Dubai, this is often interstitial condensation within the walls, a small leak from an AC condensation line, or water ingress through the building envelope. Simply cleaning without addressing this will result in it returning.

For a proper diagnosis, you need a professional inspection. They will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of the dampness hidden inside the wall. They can also take air and surface samples to be cultured in a microbiology lab to identify the specific type of mould, which determines the health risk and necessary remediation steps.

You should call a certified mould inspection and remediation company. In Dubai, look for providers who are certified by organisations like the IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification) and who can provide verifiable, lab-based before-and-after testing results. This is crucial to ensure the problem is solved for good and not just covered up. They will diagnose the building issue and outline the steps needed to rectify it.
