How to properly remove mold causing family's cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it when I was rearranging furniture, and it looks like a big black patch spreading up the wall. What's the best way to get rid of this properly and who should I call to make sure it doesn't come back?

First, move the kids to another well-ventilated room and avoid disturbing the mold patch, as this can release spores that worsen the cough. In Dubai's climate, hidden mold behind furniture is common due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use creating cold spots on walls.

For a patch of significant size spreading up the wall, professional remediation is strongly advised. The black coloration often indicates Stachybotrys or other species that can produce mycotoxins, and improper DIY removal can make the problem much worse. You need to address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.

Call a certified mold remediation specialist, not a general cleaner. They should conduct a proper inspection to identify the moisture source—often a small plumbing leak, capillary rise from a bathroom, or condensation—and provide a detailed scope of work. They will use containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination during removal.

After removal, request a clearance test from an independent third-party to verify the spore count in the area has returned to normal levels. This is the only way to be sure it’s truly gone. To prevent recurrence, ensure the room is well-ventilated, use a dehumidifier if necessary, and keep furniture slightly away from walls to allow air circulation.
