Can we clean moldy AC filter ourselves or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell that’s gotten worse over the last few weeks. I finally pulled the filter out and the back of it is covered in this black, fuzzy dust, and I’m worried it’s mold. My husband thinks we can just clean it ourselves with bleach, but I’m concerned about breathing it in. Is this something we can safely handle on our own, or should we call a professional cleaning company?

That black, fuzzy dust is almost certainly mold, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and constant AC use creating condensation. You should not clean it with bleach yourself. Disturbing it will aerosolize spores directly into your living space, which is the primary health risk, causing irritation, congestion, and worsened allergies.

For a surface-level issue on a removable filter, the safest DIY approach is to carefully seal the filter in a plastic bag, discard it, and replace it with a new one. However, the smell indicates growth is likely deeper within the AC unit itself, in the evaporator coils or drip pan, which you cannot access or properly clean without specialized equipment and biocides.

Professional remediation is strongly recommended here. They use containment procedures and HEPA vacuuming to prevent cross-contamination. In the UAE, look for a provider that offers before-and-after testing to verify the unit's air quality has been restored, as this is the only way to confirm the job was done correctly and the health risk is resolved.
