Is bathroom mold causing my kids' cough? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold growing in the corners of our master bathroom in Jumeirah Village Circle. It’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid a couple of months ago, and now there are actual black spots spreading up the wall. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can treat myself this weekend?

It is very likely the bathroom mold is contributing to your kids' cough, especially given the recent humidity. Mold releases spores and microscopic fragments that are a common irritant, causing coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy symptoms. The timing of it getting worse aligns perfectly with the increased humidity we experience here, which creates ideal conditions for mold growth.

For the black spots spreading up the wall, this is a sign of an active colony that needs to be addressed. In Dubai's climate, with constant AC use creating condensation and high ambient humidity, bathroom mold can quickly become a persistent issue. While small, superficial spots can sometimes be managed with a thorough DIY cleaning using a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution, spreading growth indicates a more established problem likely embedded in the grout or behind the silicone.

Given the health symptoms and the visible spread, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They can determine if there's hidden moisture within the wall or under the tiles that is feeding the growth, which DIY cleaning cannot fix. A proper inspection will identify the mold type and the moisture source, which is critical for a lasting solution and not just a temporary clean. For health-related cases with visible spread, this is considered urgent to prevent the problem and symptoms from worsening.
