How to treat black mold and find a hidden leak?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been incredibly humid lately and I'm worried it's spreading because my allergies have been acting up. What's the most effective way to treat this ourselves to stop it from coming back, and should we be looking for a hidden leak somewhere?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall is a classic sign of condensation due to high humidity, a frequent issue in Dubai's climate. Your allergy symptoms are a common reaction to mold spores becoming airborne.

First, address the mold itself. For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit, then wipe it dry. Crucially, the wall must be completely dry afterward; use a fan or dehumidifier in the room for at least 24 hours. Simply wiping it will not stop it from returning.

You must find the moisture source. On an interior wall, a hidden leak is less likely than condensation from humidity. The closet is probably a "dead air" space with poor circulation, allowing moist air to condense on the cooler wall surface. This is exacerbated by running AC at very cold temperatures, creating a significant difference between the room air and the wall cavity. Check if the closet is crammed full, as this restricts airflow. Feel the wall for dampness and inspect nearby rooms for any signs of water staining.

To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation. Leave the closet doors open periodically and consider installing a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as a clogged drain line can elevate indoor humidity.

If the mold returns after cleaning and improving ventilation, or if you discover the patch is larger than initially thought, a professional assessment is recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to accurately pinpoint hidden condensation issues or leaks within the wall that are not visible to the naked eye.
