Is black mold in my AC dangerous to run?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, but I just pulled the cover off and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold inside the unit itself. The smell is really musty and my throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is it safe to even run the AC in the meantime?

Running your AC with active black mold growth is not recommended. The musty smell and your scratchy throat are common reactions to mold spores being circulated. In Dubai's climate, where AC runs year-round, this continuous exposure can worsen respiratory irritation and allergy symptoms, especially overnight.

Given the visible growth and existing leak, this requires professional attention. The leak has created the persistent moisture mold needs to thrive. Simply cleaning the visible patch often misses the extent of the problem inside the unit or ductwork. A proper inspection identifies the source of the moisture and the full scope of contamination. For a case like this, with health symptoms and confirmed growth, remediation should be addressed within days, not weeks.

It is not safe to continue running the unit. Each cycle distributes spores throughout your apartment. Turn the AC off at the thermostat to stop the airflow. If the heat is unbearable, use a standalone fan temporarily, but be aware this may also stir settled spores. Ensure the unit's drain line is completely cleared as part of the remediation; clogged drains are a primary cause of indoor leaks and mold growth here.

Professional remediation should include containment of the work area, removal of all contaminated materials, application of EPA-approved antimicrobials, and most critically, fixing the underlying water leak. Always request before-and-after lab test results to verify the spore count in your air has been returned to a normal level.
