Black mold in closet - DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces outside and it’s gotten way worse since the humidity kicked in last month. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call the building management right away?

Black mold spreading on an exterior wall during humid months points to a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. The wall is likely colder than the room's dew point, causing moisture to accumulate and feed the mold.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and does not address the underlying moisture problem. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. However, since this is on an exterior wall and has been spreading for some time, DIY cleaning is often a temporary fix. The core issue is the condensation, which will continue unless the wall's temperature or the room's humidity is managed. Improving air circulation in the closet by leaving doors ajar and using a portable dehumidifier can help. Given that you're in a villa, calling building management is less about a building defect and more about accessing professional assessment. The mold's recurrence suggests a professional inspection is warranted to identify the exact moisture source and extent. In many cases, remediation is needed to properly remove the affected materials and apply antimicrobial solutions to prevent regrowth. A company with its own microbiology lab can identify the species and provide a targeted remediation plan, which is the most reliable path to a long-term solution. |
