How to stop mold in closet on interior wall?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to get these black speckles on a leather bag and some shoes. I keep the AC running but it’s been so humid lately that I’m worried it’s spreading. What’s the most effective way to stop this mold for good—should I get a dehumidifier, or is there a specific cleaning product that actually works here?

The black speckles are a classic sign of a mold issue, which is common here due to our high humidity levels, even with AC running. An interior wall closet is a prime spot because air circulation is poor and humidity gets trapped, especially on organic materials like leather.

First, address the items. For leather goods and shoes, wipe them down with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated leather cleaner. Then, thoroughly clean the closet interior. A mix of one part bleach to four parts water is effective for non-porous surfaces, but test it on a hidden area first. For drywall, a vinegar solution is often safer to prevent damage. Dry everything completely.

A dehumidifier is an excellent long-term solution for a bedroom in Dubai's climate. Aim to keep the room's relative humidity below 60%, which is the threshold where mold struggles to grow. Also, improve air flow. Leave the closet doors open when possible and ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked, as this helps circulate dry, conditioned air into the space.

If the mold returns quickly after cleaning or you see extensive growth, the issue might be deeper within the wall, perhaps from a hidden condensation leak. In such cases, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source. They can use tools like moisture meters and, if necessary, take samples for lab analysis to identify the mold type, which guides the correct remediation method.
