Black mold near AC vent in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom. It’s right above the AC vent and the room has felt really damp lately, even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to get this professionally cleaned and treated in Dubai, and should I be worried about the AC unit itself being the source?

That black spot pattern near your AC vent is a classic sign of condensation-related mould growth, a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use. The damp feeling confirms it—your AC is likely set too cold, causing the vent to sweat and the wall to stay moist.
You should be concerned enough to act promptly. The AC unit itself is a probable source, as internal coils and drip pans are damp environments where mould can thrive and then spores get blown out onto your walls. This requires a two-part approach: treating the visible mould and investigating the AC. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or store-bought sprays. These only bleach the surface and do not address the root moisture problem or properly kill the mould, which will return. For proper remediation, hire a company that follows a scientific process: containment of the area, physical removal of the mouldy material, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. Crucially, they should use a moisture meter to identify the exact condensation points. The AC unit must be inspected and professionally cleaned by technicians who can dismantle it to access and sanitize the coils and drain pan. After treatment, to prevent recurrence, keep your AC set no lower than 22-23°C to reduce extreme temperature differences that cause condensation. Ensure furniture isn't blocking airflow and consider using a dehumidifier if the room still feels damp. For a case like this, a professional inspection is recommended to assess both the wall cavity and the AC system fully. Look for providers who can offer before-and-after surface or air sample testing to verify the mould levels have been effectively reduced. |
