Safe way to remove black mold near kids' room?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the humid weather started, and I just found patches of black mold behind their bedroom wardrobe in our Jumeirah villa. It must have been growing there for a while, hidden by the furniture. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Black mold behind furniture in humid climates like Dubai is extremely common due to condensation buildup against cold exterior walls. For the safety of your children, the priority is containing the spores during removal.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can address it yourself carefully. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the room's door and placing a wet towel at the base. Before cleaning, lightly mist the mold with water to suppress spores. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a baking soda paste. Avoid bleach; it mostly lightens the color and doesn't prevent regrowth on porous surfaces. Dry the area completely with a fan immediately after cleaning.

However, since the mold was hidden behind a wardrobe, there is a high likelihood it has penetrated the wall or insulation. Visible patches are often just the surface expression of a larger problem. In villas, this frequently stems from thermal bridging or a small leak.

Given the children's respiratory symptoms and the hidden nature of the growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's condition. Proper remediation involves containment barriers and HEPA air scrubbers to prevent spreading spores throughout your home during the removal process. The most effective, science-driven approach is to identify and fix the underlying moisture source—often poor insulation or AC condensation issues—before any cleaning, or the mold will return quickly. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test to confirm the mold type, which guides the appropriate remediation protocol.
