Could AC mold be making my family sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and I've been getting terrible headaches. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading from the corner where the AC unit drips. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. Could this mold be the reason we're all feeling so sick?

Yes, the mold behind your sofa could definitely be causing those symptoms. The persistent cough and headaches you describe are common reactions to mold exposure, particularly in enclosed spaces like a home. In Dubai's climate, AC units often create condensation that leads to moisture buildup, especially if a drain line is slightly blocked or there's poor insulation. This creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on organic materials like drywall or fabric.

What you found is often called "black mold," which is a general term for several species. Some types, like Stachybotrys, can produce mycotoxins that are particularly irritating to the respiratory system and can trigger headaches. The fact that your symptoms are ongoing and affect the whole family strongly points to an environmental cause like this.

You should arrange for a professional inspection. They can identify the mold species through lab analysis to confirm the health risk and trace the moisture source—whether it's a simple AC drip pan overflow or a more significant leak. For a growth of that size, DIY cleaning is not advised as it can aerosolize the spores and spread them further. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing the contaminated materials, and fixing the underlying moisture issue to prevent it from returning. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the family away from the affected area.
