How to safely treat and prevent mold in Dubai villa?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I suspect it's mold. We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the exterior wall. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather got more humid last month. What's the best way to treat this safely and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black spots in your closet are likely mold, exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and the condensation that forms on exterior walls. For a small patch, you can clean it yourself with a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water; avoid bleach as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Wear an N95 mask and gloves during cleaning.

However, since this is on an exterior wall and your children are experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The visible patch may only be a small part of a larger moisture problem within the wall cavity. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source of the water intrusion, which is the only way to prevent it from coming back for good.

To prevent recurrence, address the local climate factors. Ensure your AC is running efficiently and not set at a temperature that causes extreme differentials with the outside air, as this promotes condensation. Use a dehumidifier in problem areas, especially during the more humid months. Improve air circulation in closets by not overpacking them and occasionally leaving doors open. For long-term prevention, the exterior wall may need to be checked for cracks or inadequate insulation that allows humid air to penetrate.

If the coughing persists, consider an indoor air quality test to identify the specific mold species and spore count, as this provides concrete data on your home's environment.
