How to remove mold from bedroom wall in humid weather?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for two years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading along the corner of our master bedroom wall, right behind the headboard. It’s been extra humid lately and I think it might be getting worse. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good, and should I be calling a professional cleaning company or is this something I can handle myself with products from ACE Hardware?

The black spots behind your headboard are a classic sign of condensation-related mold, a very common issue in Dubai's humid climate. The wall is likely cold from the AC, and when humid air condenses on it, mold finds the perfect damp environment to grow.
For a small patch (under 10 square feet), you can handle it yourself. Move the headboard to expose the area fully. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water. After cleaning, disinfect with a solution of one part household bleach to four parts water, let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse and dry thoroughly. Ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process. Products from ACE Hardware, like concrobium or other mold-specific cleaners, can be effective alternatives. However, simply cleaning the surface may not be a permanent fix. The key is to address the moisture source. This is almost always due to condensation from the temperature difference between the cold wall and the humid room air. Improve air circulation in that corner by moving the headboard slightly away from the wall and using a dehumidifier or frequently running an exhaust fan. Wiping down condensation-prone walls regularly can also help. If the mold returns quickly after cleaning, covers a large area, or you detect a musty smell, it's time for a professional assessment. The mold may have penetrated deeper into the plasterboard or there could be a hidden leak. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and sometimes air or surface sampling for lab identification, can determine the extent of the problem and the most effective remediation strategy to ensure it doesn't come back. |
