How to permanently stop mold in a Bur Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed black spots on the leather bags and shoes I stored there, and it’s been getting worse since the weather got more humid. I’m in an older building in Bur Dubai and I’m worried it’s spreading behind the walls. I had a company come for a basic clean last year but it’s clearly come back. What’s the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from returning for good?

The recurring mold in your Bur Dubai closet indicates a persistent moisture source, likely from condensation on that exterior wall. Older buildings here often lack proper insulation, creating a cold bridge where humid outdoor air meets the cooled interior surface, leading to constant dampness. A surface clean alone won't solve this.

First, move all contents out immediately. Wipe leather goods with a dilute vinegar solution and dry them completely in a less humid room to prevent further damage. For the closet itself, a basic clean with a microfibre cloth and diluted detergent can remove surface growth, but this is only temporary.

The core issue is the hidden moisture. You need a two-part professional approach: a proper inspection and remediation, followed by environmental control. An inspection with a thermal imaging camera can pinpoint the exact condensation points and check for spread behind the walls. Effective remediation involves treating the affected surfaces with antimicrobial solutions and addressing any hidden mold.

To prevent its return, you must control the humidity. Ensure your AC is running consistently to dehumidify the air, even when you're out. For that specific closet, leave the door ajar to allow air circulation. Consider installing a small renewable desiccant dehumidifier inside. In severe cases, improving the wall's insulation is the only permanent fix.

Given the recurrence and your building's age, a professional inspection is strongly advised to assess the wall cavity. Look for a provider that uses a lab to identify the mold type and offers a post-remediation verification test—this is your proof the problem is solved at its source, not just cleaned.
