Urgent: black mold in bathroom grout, wait for maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing in the grout between the wall tiles behind the toilet. It’s been really humid lately and the bathroom window is small, so it never fully dries out. Is this something I need to deal with immediately this weekend, or can it wait until I call maintenance next week?

Yes, you should address this immediately. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread quickly behind tiles where it's not visible. The black spots indicate active growth, which will worsen and potentially affect air quality.
Start by mixing one part white vinegar with one part water in a spray bottle. Spray it directly onto the moldy grout and let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface color and doesn't kill the root in porous grout. Keep the bathroom ventilated; run the exhaust fan during and after showers and leave the door open. If the window gets sun, open it to help dry the area. This is a temporary measure. The persistent moisture suggests a deeper issue, like inadequate sealing or ventilation. While you can clean the surface, the mold may have penetrated behind the tiles. When maintenance arrives, request they inspect for hidden moisture and reseal the grout. For extensive or recurring growth, a professional inspection with moisture meters can identify the source, as simply cleaning won't prevent its return in our climate. |
