How to safely clean black mold from bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I just found what looks like black fuzzy patches behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older villa in Mirdif and I’m worried the humidity from the AC is causing it. What’s the safest way to clean this myself without putting my family at risk?

Black mold growth behind furniture in Dubai bedrooms is common due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation on cooler surfaces like walls. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. For anything larger, or if the family is experiencing symptoms, professional inspection is strongly advised to assess penetration and species.

Wear an N95 mask, nitrile gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the door and opening a window if possible. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to three parts water or a diluted detergent; avoid bleach as it only removes surface colour and doesn't kill the root. Scrub the area thoroughly, then dry it completely with a fan. The key is to fix the moisture source—ensure your AC is serviced and draining properly, and consider using a dehumidifier or improving room ventilation to prevent rapid regrowth.

If the wall feels soft or the mold returns quickly, the structure itself is likely damp. In these cases, or for widespread growth, DIY cleaning is insufficient. A professional assessment with moisture meters and lab testing of the mold species is needed to determine the correct remediation protocol and ensure it's safely contained.
