Is bathroom mold an urgent professional issue?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom in our Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just spotted black spots spreading along the grout between the wall tiles near the shower. It’s gotten worse since the humidity really kicked in last month. Given how quickly it seems to be growing, is this something I need to get a professional to handle urgently this week, or can I tackle it myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware?

It depends on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch on non-porous tile grout, a DIY approach is often sufficient. However, given the musty smell and rapid spread you've described, it's likely more than just surface mold and warrants a professional assessment.

The high humidity in Dubai, especially now, creates a perfect environment for mold to thrive behind tiles and within wall cavities. The musty odor is a key indicator that the growth is likely active and may be spreading out of sight. If the grout is cracked or deteriorating, it provides a pathway for moisture to penetrate deeper.

You can attempt to clean visible surface mold with a dedicated grout cleaner or a diluted vinegar solution. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the area is completely dry afterwards. If the mold returns within a week, that confirms a persistent moisture issue and hidden growth.

For recurring mold, widespread coverage (more than a square meter), or if there's any softness or discoloration on the walls themselves, professional help is advised. They can use moisture meters and borescopes to assess what's behind the tiles. Remediation often involves removing affected grout, treating the underlying structure, and replacing seals to address the root cause. In many Dubai apartments, this is linked to inadequate bathroom ventilation; running the exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower can help reduce future occurrences.
