How to remove damp smell from Dubai closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I keep in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago and it’s getting worse, even though I never see any visible patches. What’s the best way to get rid of this smell and stop the mold from growing in our humid climate?

That damp, musty smell is a strong indicator of active mold growth, even without visible patches. In Dubai's climate, closets on exterior walls are prime locations for condensation due to the constant battle between indoor AC cooling and outdoor heat and humidity.

First, remove all items from the closet. Leather is organic and will hold both moisture and mold spores, feeding the problem. Wipe down leather goods with a dilute vinegar solution and allow them to dry completely in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight. For the closet itself, wash all interior surfaces with a mixture of detergent and warm water, followed by a wipe-down with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root cause.

To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. Leave the closet doors open to improve air circulation. Consider using a small, rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier inside the closet, which is very effective in enclosed spaces. Ensure your AC unit is serviced and draining properly, as high indoor humidity often stems from an overworked or faulty system.

If the smell persists after a thorough cleaning, the mold growth is likely behind the walls or under the flooring. This is a common issue in apartments where a small, unseen leak from a bathroom or AC condensate drain line can travel. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is the only way to locate the hidden source. They can provide documentation of the issue, which is often necessary for building management to initiate repairs.
