Can we clean this black mold ourselves safely?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid, it's appeared and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something we can safely clean ourselves with vinegar or bleach, or do we need to call a professional company to handle it?

For a small patch (under one square foot) that appeared due to seasonal humidity, DIY cleaning can be effective if you address the moisture source first. In Dubai, this is often condensation from an AC unit or a slow leak. Check that your AC drain line isn't clogged and that the unit is set to a temperature that minimizes condensation on walls.
You can clean it with a solution of distilled white vinegar, which is effective against many common molds. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes the surface colour and can worsen indoor air quality. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during cleaning. Scrub the area, let the vinegar sit for an hour, then wipe it dry. Dispose of any porous materials like cardboard boxes that were in direct contact with the mold. However, given your husband's stuffy nose—a common reaction to mold spores—and the location in a bedroom, a professional inspection is strongly advised. The visible patch might only be a fraction of the growth, as mold can spread behind drywall or under flooring. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent and identify the species, as some types like Aspergillus are more allergenic and common in AC systems here. DIY cleaning without fixing the root moisture problem often leads to rapid regrowth. |
