How to remove black mold behind toilet in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom has had this musty smell for weeks and I finally found the source – a patch of black mold growing behind the toilet in my Jumeirah Village Circle apartment. It’s been so humid lately and I think the lack of a window is making it worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I just call my building’s maintenance immediately?

Black mold behind a toilet is common in Dubai apartments, especially in windowless bathrooms where humidity from showers condenses and has no escape. The most effective DIY approach starts with identifying and stopping the moisture source—check for a leaking toilet seal or supply line connection, as these are frequent culprits.
For cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a dedicated mold cleaner or a solution of one part bleach to four parts water. Apply it to the area, let it sit for 10-15 minutes to penetrate, then scrub with a stiff brush. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry the area completely with a fan or dehumidifier afterward. This is critical; without eliminating the moisture, it will return. Given Dubai's high ambient humidity, this spot will remain vulnerable. Improve ventilation by running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier for continuous moisture control. If the patch is larger than one square foot, has a persistent musty odor after cleaning, or if you suspect the leak is from within the wall, building maintenance should be notified. They are responsible for structural issues. For health concerns, particularly for households with allergies or asthma, a professional inspection can identify the mold species and confirm the moisture source is fully resolved, as visual cleaning alone doesn't address root causes or potential hidden growth. |
