Can I remove toilet mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black and greenish mold spreading along the grout between the tiles behind our toilet in Marina. It’s been extra humid lately and the bathroom window is tiny, so ventilation isn't great. Is this something I can tackle with a store-bought cleaner like Dettol, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company?

Small surface mold on grout is often manageable yourself, but your Marina bathroom's conditions suggest a deeper issue. The high humidity and poor ventilation create a perfect environment for mold growth that likely extends beneath the surface.

For a small area, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner (not just a general disinfectant) and scrub the grout. However, if the mold reappears quickly or has changed the grout's texture, the moisture has probably penetrated behind the tiles. In Dubai's climate, this persistent dampness can lead to structural concerns over time.

Professional assessment is recommended when the area is larger than a square meter, the mold is dark green/black and slimy, or you notice a persistent musty smell. They can use moisture meters to check for water damage inside the wall and take air samples to identify if problematic spores like Aspergillus are present. A proper remediation includes addressing the hidden moisture source, not just cleaning the visible growth. Improving ventilation with an extractor fan is crucial for long-term prevention.
