How to remove nad prevent black mold on bedroom walls?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, speckled patches spreading along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our master bedroom in Jumeirah. It’s directly behind the headboard, and I think it might be from condensation from our AC unit. What’s the most effective way to safely clean this off the painted walls and make sure it doesn’t come back?

Black mold on walls in Dubai is almost always due to condensation from air conditioning. The cold wall surface meets our humid air, creating moisture that mold spores thrive on.

For a small patch, you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Do not dry brush it, as this releases spores. Instead, use a damp cloth with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted detergent. This captures the spores. After cleaning, allow the area to dry completely.

However, simply cleaning the surface is a temporary fix. The underlying cause is the temperature differential and moisture. To prevent it from returning, you must prevent condensation. This often requires improving insulation behind the wall or adjusting the AC's output and fan speed to reduce the extreme cooling of that specific surface. In many cases, ensuring furniture like your headboard isn't pressed tightly against the wall improves air circulation.

For a recurring or large spread, professional assessment is key. The mold you see is often just the surface manifestation; the structure behind the wall or the AC system itself could have a more significant issue. An inspection with moisture meters can identify the exact condensation points, and air or surface sampling can identify the mold species to confirm it is a common type like Cladosporium and not something more concerning. This is the only way to implement a permanent solution.
