How to remove damp smell from closet in humid climate?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the leather bags and shoes I stored in there. I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, and it seems to be getting worse even though we haven't had any leaks. What's the best way to completely get rid of this smell and prevent the mold from coming back in our humid climate?

That damp smell in your Jumeirah villa closet is almost certainly mold growth, a common issue here due to our high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The leather items are likely absorbing moisture and providing an organic food source.
First, remove everything from the closet. Wipe down leather goods with a solution of one part white vinegar to one part water, then let them dry completely in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. For the closet itself, scrub all interior surfaces with a mixture of water and a few drops of tea tree oil or a commercial mold-killing cleaner—avoid bleach as it only removes surface discoloration and can be harmful to inhale in an enclosed space. Leave the doors open with a fan directed inside for at least 24-48 hours to ensure it is bone dry. To prevent recurrence, you must control the humidity. A small, plug-in dehumidifier or desiccant bags like silica gel placed inside the closet are highly effective. Ensure there's at least a few inches of space between the wall and your stored items to allow for air circulation. If the smell persists after cleaning or you discover visible mold growth, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use moisture meters to find hidden condensation points and air sampling to identify the mold species, which is crucial for ensuring it's not a more persistent type. In many villas, the issue stems from temperature differences between the AC-cooled room and the non-insulated closet walls, causing constant condensation you can't see. |
