Is bedroom AC mold causing my health issues?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been blowing out this weird, damp smell for the past couple of months, and I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat that just won't go away. I finally pulled the vent cover off yesterday and the inside is covered in black and green fuzzy patches. We live in a high-humidity area near the Marina. Could this mold be the reason I've been feeling so unwell, and is it safe to just clean it myself?

Yes, the mold in your AC is very likely causing your persistent stuffy nose and sore throat. The damp smell indicates active microbial growth, and the symptoms you describe are classic reactions to inhaling mold spores and mycotoxins circulated by the AC unit. This is a common issue in high-humidity areas like the Marina, where constant AC use creates significant condensation inside the units, providing an ideal environment for mold.

It is not safe to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a high concentration of spores throughout your bedroom, potentially worsening your symptoms and contaminating other areas. Effective remediation requires specialized equipment like HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments to address the root cause inside the ductwork and cooling coils, not just the visible growth on the vent cover.

For a case with visible growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the full extent of the contamination inside the unit and ductwork, which is not visible to you. In Dubai, remediation should follow standards like the NADCA ACR for air duct cleaning to ensure it's done correctly. The process typically involves containment, removal, and cleaning of the entire system, followed by verification testing to confirm the spore count in the air has returned to a normal level. Addressing this properly should resolve your health issues.
